Below are actions which will support racial equity initiatives in our city schools. These were generated by community caucuses during the Choosing Equity Series. Progress on each action is described.

Increase books that feature people of color in school libraries.

  • The Asheville City Schools Foundation is coordinating a spring program for parents of color. Programming will focus on supporting leadership, resiliency and professional development.


Increase academic and emotional support for students.

  • The Asheville City Schools Foundation’s Student Advocacy Program supports our most vulnerable students – Learn more.

  • The Asheville City Schools Foundation is providing support through School-Team Educator Grants.

  • The Asheville City Schools Foundation and UNC Asheville have partnered togther to create a Community Engagement Liaison position to further support UNCA and city schools students and faculty - contact Brandon Whiteside

  • Principal Nicole Cush leads the Glitter Sisters program at Asheville High & SILSA to provide relationship-building, mentor-ship, and goal setting for high school students.

  • Asheville High School staff and the Asheville City Schools Foundation are recreating the Afterschool Academy at Asheville High School and SILSA.
